I often get phone calls from parents asking for ABA services who tell me that their child's school gave them an autism diagnosis. Unfortunately, I have to explain that schools cannot and do not diagnose conditions. Schools can only assess for educational needs. Under IDEA, the federal laws for special education, there are listed categories of disability. Autism is one of those categories.
When a school psychologist assesses someone, it *should* clearly state on their report that it is an educational assessment to determine need, NOT a medical diagnosis. If you need a medical diagnosis, go to https://www.abaunlimitedllc.com/post/diagnosing-providers to find a list of local providers and ones across the state! If you have more questions about the IEP process or getting a diagnosis, please feel free to reach out to us under the contact us tab.
